SUMMERSIDE — Darren Frost has laughed at the horrible events in his life and he hopes every one else will too.

Frost is a comedian who has made people chuckle by talking about his son’s open-heart surgery and his childhood experiences of being “severely bullied.”

“My motto is if you don’t laugh at it then I went through it for nothing,” Frost said.

Tonight Frost will take his act to the Heritage Pub as part of the Yuk Yuk’s Night, which takes place at the bar every Wednesday.

The event was started by a local Summerside group Haha Comedy Promotions to try to get more comedy venues in Summerside and Frost hopes he can help achieve that goal.

For Frost, life in comedy started 15 “long, long” years ago, in Brantford Ont.

Since then, he was praised, punched in the face by audience members and learned some valuable lessons about performing in certain places.

“In Toronto you have to be. . . more in their face. In Vancouver you have to go slow because they are all high and in the Maritimes you have to be nice because they are all so friendly,” Frost said in a phone interview from his hotel room in Halifax.

Today, Frost, who is now 36 and living in Toronto, holds the record for playing the most shows during the 2005 Just for Laughs festival.

Frost has even had minor roles in some large-name Hollywood movies, including ‘‘Fever Pitch,’’ ‘‘Assault on Precinct 13’’ and ‘‘Hairspray,’’ which is now playing in theatres.

But being around big-name actors like John Travolta and Drew Barrymore did not excite Frost.

He said the only difference between stand up and working on a movie is there is better food and less stress on a movie set, noting he hopes to expand his movie career.

Frost said it took him about 10 years to establish a comfortable career as a comedian.

Even now Frost said he is an outsider in the world of comedy because he chooses to inform people through his comedy and talk about the more controversial subjects. He said being a comedian is not as glamorous as most think.

“I will be driving myself across the bridge tomorrow in a rented car. I do not have my own driver,” said Frost who noted tonight will be the fourth time he has performed on P.E.I.

Looking back Frost said there is only one reason he would do it all again, noting it was his job that placed him in Toronto at a very crucial time.

“That is how I met my wife and had my kids,” he said.
