Angry Darren Frost visits the Dark Side

By Guy MacPherson

Darren Frost is nothing if not honest. You may not like what he says, but you can be sure his comedic tirades are without pretence. When this guy is pissed, it’s not just for show.

Frost bills himself as the angriest comic in North America. “I don’t go, ‘Today I’m going to be really fucking angry and I’m going to tell everyone to go fuck themselves,'” he says on the phone from his home in Toronto, “but if I feel the audience is just a bunch of Gordies and drunks and they’re pissing me off, I’ll push it that far. I don’t care.”

Even when audience members are behaving themselves, Frost affectionately refers to them as “fuckeys” or “fucktards”. On a bootleg DVD of a show he did in Ottawa, he lit into a woman who interrupted him mid-rant. “She fucking deserved it!” he yelled when the crowd expressed shock. “You bow at my feet, you motherfuckers!”

It’s no wonder, then, that Frost is headlining the Dark Side of Comedy Tour, coming to Yuk Yuk’s this Thursday to Saturday (April 6 to 8). Opening for him will be another Toronto comic, Terry Clement, a guitar-playing, rock-‘n’-roll, psychedelic comic, according to Frost. Vancouver’s Jay Brown, no stranger to shock himself, will be emceeing.

It’s also no wonder that the intense Frost has been physically assaulted twice in his 11-year professional career. Actually, maybe that’s an impressively low number, given his cantankerous nature. “In the moment, I feel justified in everything I say and do,” he explains, while admitting that, upon reflection, he’s not always right. “I’m a caged animal and you’re poking me with a stick. What do you think’s gonna happen?”

On-stage, he’ll talk about his life, whether it’s dealing with his son’s medical problems (the boy has had five surgeries in less than two years), chasing Wayne Gretzky, or getting attacked by a raccoon.

Frost, who’s appeared in numerous television ads (his Web site is aptly titled Comedywhore.com), once had a three-second role as a janitor in a Kraft Foods commercial. The corporation got wind of his outrageous act and considered firing him (it didn’t) because it found his act offensive. After the commercial stopped running, he spoke about it on-stage: “I don’t know if you know this or not, but Kraft is owned by Philip Morris, the cigarette manufacturer. I don’t know what you find offensive, but you know what I find offensive? Holes in the throat. I want to see a commercial where someone’s eating Kraft Dinner through that fucking hole.”

He was asked to cut this routine at the Just for Laughs festival’s Nasty Show. Was it holes in the throat that was offensive or speaking ill of a multibillion-dollar multinational corporation? Either way, it’s just another poke at the captive critter.

“People just hear trigger words in comedy nowadays,” Frost says. “They just hear a topic and go, ‘I don’t think anything about this could possibly be funny.’ And they hear the aggression and they go, ‘This is wrong.’ Even though I might be defending what they even defend and agree with. They just hear trigger words and go, ‘This is fucking unacceptable.’ To me, it’s unacceptable that you’re not listening.”

On his Web site, Frost describes Vancouver as one of his “favourite” cities (“I have had some great shows there and had some real weird performance-art type shows”), but he also compares our burg to an “old bitter” girlfriend: “You know, the kind of girl you love from a distance and then you get close and remember they drive you to drink.”
